A Rioja or a red wine?

A Rioja is always considered a high-quality wine compared to the simple "Vino Tinto" without a designation of origin. Rioja, the largest wine-growing region in northern Spain, is highly regarded and is one of the few Spanish wine-growing regions with DOC status, which means stricter quality regulations. There are various Rioja styles, from fruity young wines to classic reservas with long barrel ageing. The main variety is Tempranillo, followed by Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo.

The smaller neighboring region of Navarra, now part of the Basque Country, also grows Tempranillo and Garnacha, but with a stronger French influence through varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The region is known for its Basque cuisine, including pimientos rellenos and spicy chorizo.
