Merlot is a red wine variety from the Bordeaux region in France and is one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world. With 266,440 hectares, it ranks second in the global area ranking behind Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot is the result of a cross between Magdeleine Noire des Charentes and Cabernet Franc.

The wines are characterized by fruity, full-bodied and rich aromas that can be stored and are ready to drink after just a few years. These characteristics have contributed to the great popularity of Merlot.

In cuvées, it improves the accessibility of the wines and harmonizes particularly well with Cabernet Sauvignon, often stored in barriques. Bordeaux wines usually contain a high proportion of Merlot.
